Samoa's capital is one of the Pacific's cheapest stops if you skip the resorts. Markets serve full plates for under WST 10, colourful wooden buses cross Upolu for WST 2–5, and the best swimming — reef, river and harbour — is free or near-free.
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral, rebuilt in 2014 in white coral-render with twin bell towers, opens free to visitors outside Mass. Walk east along the Beach Road seawall past the Chief Justice's house and Aggie Grey's for a completely free town orientation.
Behind the produce aisles of Fugalei Market a row of cooked-food stalls sells taro, chop suey, curry and grilled chicken by the scoop. A loaded takeaway plate runs WST 7–10, a whole young drinking coconut WST 2. Cash only, no menus — point and pay.
A community-run reef hole ten minutes' walk east of the wharf, with a WST 5 entry that includes shade fales and a changing shed. Mask-and-snorkel hire is about WST 10. Swim out at high tide to the blue drop-off where parrotfish and clams sit at 12 m.
The stretch of seawall between Palolo Deep and Vaiala Beach fills each evening with locals playing volleyball and kids diving off the rocks. Sunset over Mount Vaea and the harbour costs nothing, and roadside vendors sell keke pua'a buns for WST 1.
Samoa's main produce market trades from 04:00 daily under a huge open shed. Bundles of taro, papaya, breadfruit and banana go for WST 2–5, a bag of limes WST 2, and vendors sleep on-site to hold their pitch. Prices are fixed, not haggled.
Beside the main wharf, this concrete hall sells the morning's tuna, skipjack and reef fish off ice tables. Ready-made pots of oka — coconut-cream raw fish with onion and chilli — sell for WST 5–8, and stallholders throw in a plastic fork.
The two-storey flea market opposite the harbour sells lavalava from WST 15, woven fans, siapo cloth and elei-printed shirts. Upstairs food counters serve panikeke (banana doughnuts) at WST 1 each and a bowl of sua fa'i for WST 5.
From late afternoon, drum-barrel grills appear along Saleufi and Convent Street behind the town centre. A BBQ pack of sapasui, taro and chicken or turkey tail costs WST 8–12 — the standard Samoan working dinner, served in foil until sold out.
From the Vailima grounds a signposted trail climbs 472 m to Robert Louis Stevenson's grave. The short steep route takes 45 minutes, the long loop 90. Track access is about WST 5 if you skip the museum entry, with a swimming pool at the trailhead.
A 100 m plunge waterfall into a jungle gorge, visible from a signed pull-off on the Cross Island Road about 15 km south of Apia. There's no gate and no fee — just a railing, a view and often nobody else. Any Si'umu-bound bus passes it.
Village-owned freshwater rock slides in the hills 5 km south-west of town: a 5 m main chute plus three smaller ones into pools. Custom fee is around WST 5–10 per person, collected at the top of the concrete steps. Closed on Sundays.
Apia's wooden-bodied buses depart the Fugalei terminal with no timetable — they leave when full, blasting island music. In-town fares are WST 2 and cross-island runs WST 5. Pay the driver on the way out, exact coins preferred.
