Goreme for Food & Drink Lovers — 3 Days of Clay-Pot Kebabs & Volcanic-Soil Wine

Village pazars, cave kitchens sealing testi kebap in dough, hand-pinched mantı and Emir wine poured in tuff cellars

📍 Goreme, Turkey 📅 3-day itinerary

Göreme eats what its volcanic valleys grow: pot-sealed testi kebap, thumbnail mantı under garlic yoghurt, Emir grapes rooted in tuff. Three days of village markets, cave kitchens and rakı tables, from Ürgüp's Saturday pazar to Turasan's rock cellars.

Local Markets & Neighbourhood Food

09:00
🍇 Ürgüp Cumartesi Pazarı (Saturday Market)

Cappadocia's largest weekly market fills central Ürgüp every Saturday from 07:00: pyramids of Emir grapes, mulberry pekmez, sun-dried apricots, sheep's-milk tulum cheese and sacks of Nevşehir potatoes. Stalls clear by 16:00.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 Free entry; 150-400 TL for produce
Bring small notes — stallholders rarely break a 500 TL bill before midday.
12:00
🫓 Nazar Börek & Cafe

Family-run gözleme kitchen on Müze Caddesi where the women roll yufka at a street-facing sac griddle. Order the spinach-and-cheese or the Cappadocian potato version dusted with pul biber, plus a cold glass of ayran.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 180-260 TL
Ask for extra sumac and a squeeze of lemon on the kıymalı — it isn't offered by default.
14:30
🔥 Fırın Express

Wood-fired pide oven a block from Göreme's otogar, turning out kıymalı and kaşarlı flatbreads in under ten minutes. The lahmacun comes thin and blistered, eaten rolled around parsley and lemon at pavement tables.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 150-300 TL
17:00
Cafe Şafak

Göreme's long-standing local çay house, where drivers and pension owners play okey over tulip glasses of Rize tea. Turkish coffee arrives with lokum, and the kitchen keeps making menemen well into the evening.

⏱ 1.5 hours
Tea is refilled until you turn your glass upside down on the saucer — that's the local signal to stop.

Signature Dishes & Restaurants

10:00
🍳 Kelebek Cave Hotel breakfast terrace

Serpme kahvaltı laid across a fairy-chimney terrace: village eggs, honeycomb, kaymak, cured olives, tahini-pekmez, grilled sucuk and a dozen small dishes refilled until you surrender. Non-guests welcome if booked ahead.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 450-600 TL per person
Book the 10:00 sitting — the balloon crowd clears out and the terrace empties.
13:00
🥟 Old Cappadocia Cafe & Restaurant

Stone-vaulted room off the main square serving Cappadocian mantı — thumbnail dumplings under garlic yoghurt and burnt-butter pul biber — alongside sac tava, lamb and peppers sizzled on a convex iron plate.

⏱ 1 hour
15:00
👩‍🍳 Cappadocia Home Cooking, Ayvalı village

Hands-on class in a cave kitchen in Ayvalı, 12 km south of Göreme: you pinch mantı by hand, seal a testi pot with a dough lid, roll yaprak sarma, then eat the lot at the family's long table with village wine.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 2,200 TL per person
18:00
🏺 Dibek Restaurant

Three-hundred-year-old stone house where testi kebap is sealed in clay, cooked slowly all afternoon and cracked open at your cushioned floor table. The kuru fasulye bean stew and Cappadocian dolma are equally serious.

Phone the same morning to reserve a pot — they seal a fixed number of testis each day.

Street Food, Bars & Food Culture

09:30
🍅 Mydonose Cafe

Balcony café above Göreme's main street doing proper cezve-brewed Turkish coffee and menemen with sucuk cooked to order in a copper pan. Pomegranate is pressed at the counter each morning until the crate runs out.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 200-350 TL
Order the coffee az şekerli — sade here is bracingly bitter.
12:30
🎃 Pumpkin Göreme Restaurant

Six-table courtyard kitchen with a single daily set menu — mezze, a stuffed-pumpkin or aubergine main and a homemade dessert — cooked by the owners themselves. Reservations essential; there are two sittings.

⏱ 1.5 hours
14:30
🍷 Turasan Winery, Ürgüp

Cappadocia's oldest commercial winery, pressing indigenous Emir whites and Kalecik Karası reds from vines rooted in volcanic tuff. Tastings run in the cellar cut straight into the rock behind the shop counter.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 400-650 TL tasting flight
17:30
🍺 Fat Boys Bar & Café

Göreme's long-running bar on Belediye Caddesi, pouring draught Efes, Kavaklıdere bottles and rakı with a proper meze plate. Balloon pilots and valley guides drift in once the afternoon flights are grounded.

Rakı comes with water and ice on the side — pour half and half, water first, or it clouds badly.
