Bern for Solo Travel Lovers — 3 Days of Riverside Freedom and Easy Company

Communal tables, self-managed culture centres and the Aare drift — a capital small enough to walk alone and social enough that you rarely stay that way.

📍 Bern, Switzerland 📅 3-day itinerary

Bern is built for solo days: a 6km walkable core, one of Europe's lowest crime rates, and a river culture where strangers share grass, benches and beer. This route links hostel lounges, shared-table kitchens and the Aare float.

Solo-Friendly Spots & Safe Neighbourhoods

09:00
🛏️ Bern Backpackers Hotel Glocke

Rathausgasse 75, inside the old town core. Dorm beds from CHF 39, private singles CHF 89, reception 07:00–23:00. The basement lounge and shared kitchen fill nightly with travellers swapping Aare and Gurten tips.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 CHF 39-89
Ask reception for your free Bern Ticket — every overnight guest rides trams and buses at no cost.
12:00
🍜 Markthalle Bern

Bubenbergplatz 9, opposite the station. Sixteen food counters — Thai, Ethiopian, Bernese sausage — arranged around long communal benches where sharing a table is standard. Open 07:00–23:30, mains CHF 14–22.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 CHF 14-22
Sit at the central bar counter rather than the outer tables; that is where solo eaters get spoken to.
14:30
🌳 Münsterplattform

The elevated stone terrace behind the cathedral, 30 metres above the Aare, with chestnut trees, painted chess boards and a small pavilion kiosk. Free and open daily 08:00–20:00 in summer, a calm spot to read alone.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Free
17:00
🌹 Rosengarten

Alter Aargauerstalden 31b, a ten-minute uphill walk from the eastern bridge. Some 220 rose varieties, 200 iris beds and the classic view over the old town roofs. The park never closes; the terrace restaurant runs to 23:30.

⏱ 1.5 hours
The east-facing benches by the pond stay quiet at sunset while everyone else crowds the railing.

Social Scenes & Meeting Locals

10:00
🚶 Bern Free Walk, Bundesplatz

The tip-based English walking tour departs from the fountains on Bundesplatz, two hours through guild houses and side lanes. Groups run 10–20 people, so joining alone is normal. Budget CHF 15–20 as the tip.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 CHF 15-20 tip
Arrive at 10:00 for coffee on the Bundeshaus terrace and you will already know half the group.
13:00
🍺 Altes Tramdepot

Grosser Muristalden 6, a converted tram shed brewing four unfiltered beers in copper kettles behind the bar. Long shared tables, Bernese Rösti around CHF 21, half-litre house lager CHF 6.80. Kitchen open 11:00–00:00 daily.

⏱ 1 hour
15:00
🎨 PROGR / Café Turnhalle

Waisenhausplatz 30, a former grammar school now holding around 60 artist studios, many open to walk-ins on weekday afternoons. Café Turnhalle occupies the old gym, pouring CHF 5 coffees at big communal tables.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 CHF 5-12
18:00
🎸 Reitschule / Sous le Pont

Neubrückstrasse 8, Bern's self-managed culture centre under the railway viaduct. Sous le Pont serves CHF 18 plates and CHF 5 beers in a graffiti courtyard where students, punks and office workers drink at the same benches.

The courtyard bar is cash only, and photographing people here is firmly frowned upon.

Solo Adventures & Self-Discovery

09:30
🚠 Gurten Kulm via Gurtenbahn

The funicular climbs from Bern-Wabern every 15 minutes from 07:00, six minutes to the 858-metre summit. Return CHF 12.80, free with the Bern Ticket. Marked ridge trails loop the plateau in about 45 minutes.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 CHF 12.80 return
Walk down the Eichholz path instead of riding back — 50 minutes through beech forest straight to the river.
12:30
🌭 Camping Eichholz riverside kiosk

Strandweg 49, the campsite kiosk on the Aare bank where swimmers gather before floating downstream. Bratwurst CHF 7, salads around CHF 12, deck chairs on the grass. Open May to September, 09:00–22:00, changing rooms free.

⏱ 1.5 hours
14:30
🏊 Aare float, Eichholz to Marzilibad

The 30-minute drift downstream that half of Bern does after work; water sits at 18–20 °C in July and the current moves fast. Entry and exit are free. Grab the yellow handrails at Marzili — miss them and the next exit is far.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Free (Wickelfisch bag CHF 15)
17:30
🍷 Terrasse Schwellenmätteli

Dalmaziquai 11, a wooden deck cantilevered over the Aare weir with the water thundering directly beneath the tables. Coffee CHF 5.50, a glass of Bernese white CHF 7.50, open 09:00–23:30 with bar seating facing the river.

Take a single seat at the outer bar rail rather than booking a table — no minimum spend, best view.
