Europe's largest covered riverside market, a 1929 art-deco hulk on the Nervión with 10,000 m² over three floors. Ground level is fish and Bizkaia produce, upper floor is pintxo bars. Tue-Sat roughly 08:00-14:30 and 17:00-20:00, Mon mornings only.
A hat shop on Calle Victor since 1857, still the reference for the txapela — the Basque beret. Merino wool models come in black, red and navy, sized in centimetres, with the Bilbao-standard eight-inch diameter stacked to the ceiling in wooden drawers.
The old-town spine linking Plaza Nueva to Bidebarrieta, lined with confiterías, anchovy specialists and conserveras. Look for Bombonería Mendaro chocolates, Conservas Ortiz bonito del norte tins and jars of guindillas de Ibarra peppers.
The 1851 neoclassical square with 64 arches, ringed by wine merchants, an old stamp-and-coin trade and cured-goods shops under the colonnade. Sunday mornings the arcade fills with a flea and collectables market from about 09:00 to 14:00.
Bilbao's 1.5 km commercial axis through Abando, running from Plaza Circular to Plaza Zabálburu. The eastern half holds the international flagships; walking west past Plaza Moyúa the addresses turn to Spanish labels and independent jewellers.
The full-line department store at Gran Vía 7-9, useful for its gourmet basement of Basque products and its ground-floor tax-free desk. Open Monday to Saturday 09:30-21:30, closed most Sundays outside the December and sales periods.
The parallel streets behind Gran Vía where Bilbao's independents cluster: concept stores, Basque womenswear, leather goods and menswear tailors in ground-floor units, quieter and more browsable than the main avenue.
A Robert A.M. Stern-designed mall on the riverbank near the Deusto bridge, four levels of Spanish high-street chains with river-facing terraces. Open daily 10:00-22:00, with a cinema and food court on the top floor.
The Casco Viejo street running from Plaza Nueva to the Arriaga theatre, home to long-standing booksellers stocking Basque-language titles, Bilbao photography books and antique prints of the pre-Guggenheim riverfront.
The museum shop at Abandoibarra 2, accessible from the lobby without a gallery ticket. Stocks Gehry-designed objects, Basque design pieces and Puppy merchandise, plus catalogues in Spanish, Basque and English.
A working neighbourhood market east of the centre, two Metro stops from Casco Viejo, with no tourist pricing. Around it are haberdashers, cheese shops and a Saturday street stall row along Calle Karmelo where locals actually shop.
The official club shop at the San Mamés stadium, Rafael Moreno Pitxitxi kalea. Athletic fields only Basque-trained players, so the red-and-white striped shirt is a regional statement rather than ordinary football merchandise.
