Athens for Food & Drink Lovers — 3 Days of Meze, Markets and Wine

Central Market butchers at dawn, souvlaki on Mitropoleos, natural Assyrtiko in Koukaki and the taverna kitchens of Exarcheia and Petralona.

📍 Athens, Greece 📅 3-day itinerary

Athens eats late, loudly and cheaply. Between the Varvakios meat halls, century-old grocers on Evripidou, wine bars pouring indigenous Greek grapes and mageirio kitchens serving yesterday's slow-cooked pots, three days barely covers the plate.

Local Markets & Neighbourhood Food

09:00
🥩 Varvakios Agora (Central Municipal Market)

Athens' 1886 meat and fish halls on Athinas Street, open Mon–Sat roughly 07:00–15:00, closed Sunday. Butchers hang whole lambs and call prices; the fish hall opposite ices sea bream, gavros and octopus. Free to walk; buying is optional.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 Gratis toegang; olives/cheese vanaf €3-8 per kilo
12:00
🌿 Evripidou Street spice shops — Bahar & Elixir

A two-block strip behind the market where the air smells of cumin and dried oregano. Bahar (Evripidou 31) sells Greek mountain tea, Cypriot pastourma and wild oregano; Elixir stocks herbs by weight in paper cones.

14:30
🍲 Diporto Agoras — the cellar taverna under the market

An unmarked basement at Sokratous 9 with no sign, no menu and two doors in the pavement. Chickpea stew, fried gavros, horta and barrel retsina, served since 1887 by whoever is cooking. Cash only, lunch hours only.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 €12-16 p.p. inclusief wijn, alleen contant
17:00
Mokka Coffee, Athinas 44

A roaster working the same drum since 1922, three doors from the market. Order a briki-brewed Greek coffee metrios at the counter and buy beans ground to order; the shop smells of hot cardamom-free Arabica all afternoon.

⏱ 1.5 hours

Signature Dishes & Restaurants

10:00
🥐 Ariston bougatsa & pie shop, Voulis 10

A 1910 pie counter in the arcade off Syntagma, run by the same family for four generations. Kourou-dough tiropita, minced-meat pies and spinach pies come out in trays every half hour; standing room only, no seats.

13:00
🐙 Oinopoleion / Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani, Sokratous 1

A deli-taverna specialising in Anatolian-Greek charcuterie: pastourma, soutzouki and smoked pork from Drama, sliced at the counter and eaten with graviera and Santorini fava at marble tables.

⏱ 1 hour
15:00
🍷 Heteroclito wine bar, Fokionos 2

A Greek-only wine list of about 300 labels — Assyrtiko from Santorini, Xinomavro from Naoussa, Malagousia from Halkidiki — poured by the glass with plates of Metsovone cheese and Mani olives.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Glazen €6-11, flessen vanaf €22
18:00
🍆 Oikonomou taverna, Troon 41, Ano Petralona

A residential-neighbourhood mageirio where the dishes of the day sit in trays behind glass: lamb fricassee, gigantes, stuffed courgette flowers. You point at what you want. Open evenings, closed Sunday.

Street Food, Bars & Food Culture

09:30
🍩 Krinos loukoumades, Aiolou 87

Frying honey-soaked dough balls since 1923 in a tiled room north of Monastiraki. A portion arrives hot, drenched in thyme honey and cinnamon; the same counter serves bougatsa and thick chocolate in winter.

12:30
🥙 Kostas souvlaki, Pentelis 5, Plateia Agia Irini

A one-window shop open since 1950, selling only pork souvlaki in pita with a tomato-paprika sauce. Roughly 12:00 until sold out, often by 16:00. Eat standing on the church square opposite.

⏱ 1.5 hours
14:30
🧀 Mesogaia deli, Nikis 52, Plaka

A small producer-focused grocer stocking graviera from Naxos, ladotyri from Lesvos, Kalamata olives in brine and single-estate olive oil. Staff cut samples and vacuum-pack cheese for flights.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Kaas €14-32/kg, olijfolie €9-18 per fles
17:30
🍸 The Clumsies, Praxitelous 30

A cocktail bar in a neoclassical house that has ranked in the World's 50 Best Bars for years, building drinks around Greek mastiha, tsipouro and Cretan honey. Two rooms: casual front bar, reservation-only back room.
