Beyond the Mozart trail, Salzburg runs on Fischer von Erlach Baroque, a marble cube of modern art on a cliff, and a festival district blasted into the Mönchsberg. Three days of galleries, puppet opera and monastery courtyards, nearly all within a 20-minute walk.
A white Untersberg-marble cube opened in 2004, perched 60m above the old town on the Mönchsberg cliff, with four floors of Austrian post-1945 art and photography. Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, Wednesdays until 20:00.
Fischer von Erlach's 1707 university church is the least decorated Baroque interior in Salzburg: a convex white facade, almost no gilding, daylight dropping from the dome onto bare stucco. Daily 09:00–18:00.
The town-centre half of the Museum der Moderne, inside a 17th-century canons' house on Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse, concentrating on graphic art and the Austrian Photo Gallery holdings. Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, Wed to 20:00.
Thaddaeus Ropac opened his first gallery in Salzburg in 1983; the Villa Kast on Mirabellplatz still hangs Baselitz, Kiefer and Rauch in domestic-scale rooms. Mon–Fri 10:00–18:00, Sat 10:00–16:00.
The tour takes you into the Grosses Festspielhaus, the Haus für Mozart and the Felsenreitschule — a former riding school with 96 arcades cut straight into the Mönchsberg rock face. Tours daily at 14:00, extra slots in summer.
The family moved to this eight-room apartment in 1773 and stayed until 1787. Rebuilt after 1944 bombing, it holds Mozart's original fortepiano, Leopold's correspondence and a room-by-room audio guide. Daily 09:00–17:30.
The city museum covers the prince-archbishops, Salzburg's Romantic-era reinvention as a tourist city, and rotating Kunsthalle shows in the vaulted ground floor. Tue–Sun 09:00–17:00.
Founded in 1913, this company performs full-length opera with hand-carved marionettes worked by a team above the stage; The Magic Flute and Der Rosenkavalier rotate through the season. Tickets €22–40, curtain usually 19:30.
Salzburg's oldest burial ground has been in use since roughly 700 AD — wrought-iron grave markers, arcaded family crypts of merchant dynasties, and rock-cut catacomb chapels in the cliff wall above. Cemetery daily from 06:30.
The right-bank tanners' lane, barely three metres wide and shaded all day by the Kapuzinerberg, runs north to the Sebastian cemetery with its Italian arcades and the graves of Paracelsus and Constanze Mozart.
An artist-run association since 1844, showing contemporary work in the 1885 Künstlerhaus by the Salzach — Grosser Saal for solo shows, Kabinett for local artists, plus a reading room of artists' books. Tue–Sun 12:00–19:00.
The Augustinian monks' brewery tavern has poured since 1621: you rinse your own stoneware Krug at the stone fountain, hand it to the tapper, and carry it to one of 1,400 seats. Food comes from stalls in the corridor. Cash only.
