Chiba shopping runs on three currencies: peanuts, seafood and soy sauce. Between the 300-year-old Narita approach shops, Makuhari's glass-box outlet malls and Katsuura's dawn morning market, you buy things Tokyo doesn't sell.
One of Japan's three great morning markets, running since 1591. Roughly 50 stalls line Shitamachi and Nakamachi streets selling Boso-caught kinmedai, dried aji, wakame and hand-thrown Katsuura pottery. Open 06:30-11:00, closed Wednesdays.
Yachimata grows about 80% of Japan's domestic peanuts, and Yamahiko roasts on site. Buy Nakateyutaka large-grain shelled peanuts, peanut miso and butter peanut cream. Open 09:00-18:00; free tasting counter at the entrance.
Choshi has brewed shoyu since 1645 and Yamasa's factory shop stocks bottles you won't find in supermarkets: barrel-aged nama-shoyu, sashimi-grade tamari and soy-sauce soft serve. Tours run 09:00-15:00, shop open till 16:00.
Roadside station devoted to Boso loquats — biwa jam, biwa curry, biwa soft serve and loquat-leaf tea, plus southern Chiba flowers and Nanboso rice. Open 09:15-17:00 daily, with a farm-produce hall attached.

Chiba's flagship department store connects to the covered C-ONE and Central Park arcades running toward Chiba Station. The basement depachika sells Chiba-only sweets; upper floors carry Japanese ceramics and lacquer.
The station-integrated mall spanning the JR concourse, packed with small Japanese boutiques, stationery specialists and a strong Chiba-souvenir floor near the central gates. Open 10:00-21:00, restaurant floors until 22:00.
A senbei shop on the pilgrimage approach where rice crackers are grilled over charcoal in the front window and sold warm. Also stocks Narita's yokan and kuzumochi. Open around 09:00-17:00; expect a queue on temple festival days.
Narita's approach street kept its bladesmith trade because of the eel restaurants — this shop sells carbon-steel deba, yanagiba and kitchen knives, with sharpening done at the counter while you wait.
The Ono River canal in Sawara is lined with Edo-period merchant houses still trading: Shoyu brewers, sake shops, tsukudani sellers and Iwasaki basketry. Most open 10:00-17:00, several closed Mondays.
The harbour tower's ground-floor shop stocks Chiba prefecture goods in one place — nure-senbei from Choshi, peanut confectionery, Boso seaweed and Chiba-kun mascot items. Open until 19:00 in summer, 18:00 in winter.
