Parnell's upper strip holds several jade and bone-carving workshops where greenstone from Arahura River is cut on site. Genuine NZ pounamu pendants run NZ$180–600 with certificate of origin; whalebone hei matau from NZ$250. Anything under NZ$40 is imported nephrite.
Two flagship stores in the restored Britomart brick precinct off Galway St, both closing 6pm weekdays. Karen Walker's Runaway Girl line and Zambesi's dark deconstructed tailoring are New Zealand's best-known fashion exports — jackets NZ$600–1,200, jewellery from NZ$120.
136–146 Ponsonby Rd houses Ponsonby Central's laneway retail alongside a 1km strip of independents — Superette, Ingrid Starnes, Standard Issue knitwear. Merino-possum blend jerseys NZ$220–380; most stores open 10am–5:30pm, Sunday 11am–4pm.
19 High St, open daily. Independent bookseller with the country's strongest Māori and Pasifika writing section — Witi Ihimaera, Tusiata Avia, Patricia Grace. Staff handwrite shelf cards; the NZ fiction table near the door changes weekly.
Newmarket's Teed and Nuffield St blocks hold Auckland's homeware design core. Douglas & Bec's brass-and-oak lighting is made in Auckland; Città sells linen and ceramics designed locally. Cushion covers NZ$70–130, lighting NZ$700 up. Open until 5:30pm.
183 Karangahape Rd — a 1924 arcade of vintage dealers and record shops above Myers Park, with Peach Pit and Coco's Cantina at the far end. Second-hand denim NZ$40–90, vinyl NZ$15–50. Several traders stay open past 7pm on Fridays.
69 St Georges Bay Rd, Saturdays 8am–1:30pm and Sundays 9am–1:30pm. Producers sell UMF-rated manuka honey (NZ$45–150 a jar depending on grade), Kaitaia fire chilli sauce, and Coromandel sea salt. Indoor deli trades all week.
13 Rose Rd, free entry, Tuesday–Saturday 10am–5pm. Craft and applied-arts gallery with a shop stocking small runs by New Zealand ceramicists, weavers and jewellers — the antidote to airport souvenirs. Pieces from NZ$45 to several hundred.
7 Queen St's Commercial Bay stacks international labels over a basement food hall; across the road Smith & Caughey's has traded since 1880 with a strong NZ wool and Icebreaker floor. Both open daily from 10am. Icebreaker base layers NZ$110–200.
Quay St's downtown wine retailers stock Waiheke syrah and Marlborough sauvignon that rarely leave New Zealand — Man O' War, Kumeu River chardonnay, Church Road single-vineyard. Bottles NZ$28–90; shops arrange courier-to-airport pickup.
