The Swan River inlet at the CBD's edge, ringed with waterfront bars and the BHP Water Park. Busy, well-lit and heavily patrolled until late — the stretch solo travellers walk without a second thought. The 110 m Bell Tower carillon rings most afternoons.
Tip-based 90-minute walking tours leaving from Forrest Place most mornings at 10am, covering convict-era laneways and Perth's hidden bar doorways. Groups of 8-15, mostly solo travellers, and the guides finish at a bar for whoever wants to carry on.
A converted crocodile farm on Mews Road serving Pale Ale brewed in the tanks behind the bar. The Shed's long shared benches seat 300 and are explicitly communal — you sit where there's space. Open 11am daily, pizzas AU$24-30, schooners around AU$10.
Fremantle's only licensed beach means you can carry a drink onto the sand between the Round House and Kidogo Arthouse. Deckchairs face west for the Indian Ocean sunset. Cocktails AU$20-24, small plates from AU$18, open from noon seven days.
An 1887 limestone pub on South Terrace whose underground Odd Fellow bar runs live music and quiz nights in a room small enough that you end up talking to the next table. Beer garden shaded by a Moreton Bay fig; pints around AU$12, no cover charge.
Ferries from Fremantle's B Shed take 30 minutes; the island has no private cars, so a hire bike is the way round the 22 km Bayseeker route past Little Salmon Bay and The Basin. Ferry plus admission about AU$75 return, bike hire AU$30 for the day.
The 1864 former Governor's summer residence on Thomson Bay, now an open-sided pub with picnic tables straight onto the sand. Fish and chips around AU$28, and the queue-at-the-bar system makes arriving alone frictionless. Kitchen serves noon to 8pm.
Free entry on Cliff Street, built around the recovered timbers of the Batavia, wrecked off the Abrolhos in 1629 — the mutiny that followed killed over 100 survivors. Compact enough for an hour and quiet enough to read every panel. Open 9:30am-5pm daily.
The grassed terraces below the 1910 Indiana pavilion fill each evening with locals watching the sun drop into the Indian Ocean — a rare Australian west-coast sunset over water. Free, patrolled by surf lifesavers until 6pm in summer, train to Cottesloe then 15 min walk.
