Language	Arabic (العربية — Modern Standard Arabic is the written and formal language; the spoken dialect of Jeddah is Hejazi Arabic (لهجة حجازية), which is the most widely understood dialect in the Arab world due to its use in early Arabic media and its similarity to Classical Arabic). English is widely spoken in Jeddah — at hotels, airports, malls, and tourist sites — more so than in Riyadh. Filipino, South Asian, and Egyptian Arabic are also commonly heard (the large expatriate workforce).
Currency	Saudi Riyal (SAR). Current rate approximately SAR 4.20 = €1 (the Riyal is pegged to the US Dollar at 3.75 SAR/USD). Cards accepted at all hotels, malls, and most restaurants. Tap-to-pay (contactless) is ubiquitous in Saudi Arabia (one of the highest contactless payment rates in the world). ATMs at Saudi National Bank, Al Rajhi Bank throughout the city.
Transport	The Jeddah Metro (under construction as of 2025 — Phase 1 expected 2025–2026). Current transport: Uber/Careem (the most practical option for tourists; SAR 20–60 for most city trips; the app works flawlessly). Taxis (metered since 2017, SAR 15 flag fall; less used since ride-hailing). Corniche walking: the 30km Corniche is pedestrian-friendly (wide pavement, public restrooms, cafés). Car hire: recommended for Obhur Creek trips.
Best time	November–March (the Red Sea winter: 22–30°C, humidity manageable, the Corniche evening temperature comfortable; the best months for Al-Balad walking and outdoor sightseeing). Ramadan (the Islamic lunar month, dates change annually — approximately March in 2025–2026): the city transforms at night (iftaar (breaking fast) gatherings, special Ramadan foods, the streets are busiest after midnight). Avoid June–August: 38–45°C, extreme humidity from the Red Sea.
Getting in	King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED): the new terminal opened 2018, 21km north of the city centre. Taxi/Uber to Al-Balad: SAR 60–80. Direct flights from London Heathrow (Saudia, British Airways), Paris CDG, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Rome, and all major European cities. Tourist e-visas available online (for 49 countries) for USD 135 (multi-entry, 1 year). Hajj/Umrah visas are separate — tourists use the tourist e-visa.
Tipping	10% at restaurants (not legally obligatory but increasingly expected, particularly in international-style restaurants; service charge often included at hotels). Taxi/Uber: no tip. Hotel staff: SAR 5–20/day. Note: tipping was historically not practised in Saudi culture but has become more common in the expatriate and tourist-oriented hospitality sector.
Safety	Jeddah is safe for tourists. Saudi Arabia has very low crime rates. Women can travel solo (since 2019 Saudi Arabia has allowed women to travel independently without a male guardian (mahram)). Dress code: women should cover shoulders and knees in Al-Balad and at mosques (an abaya is no longer legally required for non-Muslim foreign women as of 2019, though modest dress is appreciated). Alcohol is completely prohibited and unavailable. No photography of government buildings, military sites, or individuals without consent.
