Language	Spanish. English spoken at hotels and some Malecón restaurants, but very limited elsewhere. A few Spanish phrases will significantly improve the experience — locals are warm and patient with visitors attempting Spanish.
Currency	US Dollar ($) — Ecuador has used the US dollar as its official currency since 2000. Cash is essential for markets, street food, and taxis. ATMs in hotels and banks on 9 de Octubre. Larger bills ($50, $100) can be difficult to break at small shops.
Transport	Guayaquil has the Metrovía (BRT bus rapid transit, $0.30/ride). Taxis are metered and cheap ($2–6 within the centro). Uber operates and is reliable ($3–8). The Malecón is easily walkable. Las Peñas and Cerro Santa Ana are a 10-minute walk from the north end of the Malecón.
Best time	June–November (dry season — less humidity, lower chance of rain, clearest skies for Galápagos departures). December–May: the wet season brings heavy tropical rain but also lush green vegetation and fewer tourists. Guayaquil is hot year-round (28–33°C average).
Getting in	José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport (GYE): 5km from centro, $6–8 by taxi, 10 minutes. Uber: $4–5. No city bus directly from terminal. Main hub for flights to Galápagos (2 hrs, LATAM and Avianca). International connections: Miami, Bogotá, Lima, Panama City.

Safety	Guayaquil has a reputation for crime that significantly exceeds its actual risk for tourists in tourist areas.
