Košice packs its shopping into 1.2km of baroque boulevard and the alleys behind it: a daily covered market, a craftsmen's street of working studios, juried Slovak folk craft, and two big malls a tram ride out. Cash still matters at the stalls.
Košice's covered market trades daily from roughly 06:00 to 17:00, Saturday to noon. Outer stalls sell bryndza sheep cheese, forest honey, smoked paprika and horseradish; the inner halls hold butchers, pickle jars and rye bread.
The state folk-craft centre's Košice branch stocks juried work only: Modra majolica, corn-husk dolls, wire-work figures, cherry-wood spoons and embroidered linen, each labelled with the maker's name and village. Weekdays 10:00-18:00, Saturday to 13:00.
Restored single-storey burgher houses along Hrnčiarska hold working studios: a blacksmith, a bookbinder, a glass painter, a candlemaker and a gingerbread bakery. Most open afternoons and sell straight from the bench, so pieces are one-offs.
Košice's original craft brewery fills one-litre growlers and bottles of its pale ale, IPA and dark lager to take away from a room barely bigger than the bar. Doors open mid-afternoon and the standing space fills by six.
Three floors and over a hundred stores five minutes' walk from the south end of Hlavná: Reserved, Zara, CCC shoes, the Martinus bookshop and a full Tesco in the basement. Open 09:00-21:00 daily, food court on the top level.
Independent bookshop with a deep Slovak literature and art shelf, English and German translations of Central European authors, plus locally printed Košice maps, risograph prints and postcards near the till. Weekdays 09:00-19:00.
Nineteenth-century artillery barracks converted into brick pavilions housing design studios, a ceramics workshop and rotating maker markets. Pop-up stands sell Slovak-designed totes, screen prints, ceramics and jewellery straight from the designers.
The old tobacco factory turned culture hub keeps a small counter of local zines, band merch, screen-printed shirts and eastern Slovak natural wine beside the bar. Design markets take over the courtyard several weekends a year.
The everyday neighbourhood market where Košice locals actually shop: forest mushrooms and blueberries in season, sheep cheese, pickled cabbage by the ladle, garden seedlings and cheap textiles. Busiest between 07:00 and 10:00 on Friday and Saturday.
The East Slovak Gallery's ground-floor shop sells exhibition catalogues, limited-edition prints by regional artists and reproductions from the Košice Modernism collection — smarter souvenirs than anything sold on the boulevard outside. Closed Mondays.
The city's largest mall, fifteen minutes out by tram: around 130 units, a Kaufland hypermarket, Slovak chains including Kara leather and Nay electronics, and a customer desk handling VAT-refund paperwork for non-EU visitors. Daily 09:00-21:00.
Viennese-style confectionery on the main street since the 1950s, boxing its own chocolates, marzipan figures and Kaschau gingerbread in packaging sturdy enough to fly home. Order at the counter, then pay at the separate till.
