Omsk is Russia's sixth-largest city and the second city of Siberia, sitting at the confluence of the Om and Irtysh rivers on the West Siberian Plain — a strategic position that made it the capital of the White Army government of Admiral Kolchak during the Russian Civil War (1918–1920) and, before that, the administrative capital of all of Siberia during the Tsarist period when it was the seat of the Governor-General. The 1898 neo-Byzantine cathedral was demolished by the Soviets in 1935 and rebuilt identically in 2007 — the rebuilt version is an exact replica using historical photographs and architectural plans; the golden domes visible across the Irtysh River are one of Omsk's defining skyline elements.
