The main risks are: hiking (the levada walks involve narrow paths, drops, and tunnels — use a headlamp in tunnels, stay on the path, wear grippy shoes); the Monte toboggan (speeds can be alarming but the carreiros are professionals and injuries are rare); and driving on the mountain roads (steep, narrow, and with drivers who know every bend better than you do).
