Gdansk for Shopping Lovers — 3 Days of Baltic Amber, Kashubian Craft & Granary-Island Design

Market halls, amber workshops on the Motława, Wrzeszcz concept stores and the malls locals actually use

📍 Gdansk, Poland 📅 3-day itinerary

Gdansk sells what it has made and traded for 800 years: Baltic amber, Kashubian linen, Bolesławiec stoneware and Goldwasser. Three days moves from the 1896 Hala Targowa to Wrzeszcz design boutiques and back to riverside souvenir stalls.

Local Markets & Artisan Shops

09:00
🥬 Hala Targowa (Market Hall), Plac Dominikański 1

Neo-Gothic 1896 iron-and-glass hall built over a 13th-century Dominican crypt, visible through a floor window. Around 200 stalls sell Kashubian cheese, smoked Baltic flounder, pickles and honey. Mon-Fri 9:00-18:00, Sat to 15:00.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 Free entry; smoked fish 35-60 PLN/kg, honey jar 25-40 PLN
The basement stalls under the escalator are cheapest for linen tablecloths and wooden kitchenware — ground-floor sellers mark the same goods up 30%.
12:00
🎪 Jarmark św. Dominika, Targ Węglowy

Trading since 1260, the Dominican Fair fills Targ Węglowy and the surrounding streets with roughly 1,000 stalls from late July to mid-August: amber, Bolesławiec pottery, leather goods, antiques and Kashubian embroidery. Daily 10:00-20:00.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 Free entry; Bolesławiec mug 45-90 PLN, embroidered runner 60-150 PLN
Antique dealers cluster at the Targ Węglowy end nearest the Great Armoury; prices drop noticeably in the fair's final three days.
14:30
🟠 Długie Pobrzeże amber stalls, Motława waterfront

The quay between the Green Gate and the Crane lines up dozens of open-front amber kiosks and small workshops where cutters polish cabochons on site. Cognac, butterscotch and rare green amber sold loose by the gram.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Raw amber 3-15 PLN/gram; silver-set pendant 120-400 PLN
17:00
⚙️ Wielki Młyn (Great Mill) & Amber Museum shop, Wielkie Młyny 16

The 1350 Teutonic grain mill now houses the Amber Museum, whose shop carries certified inclusion pieces, amber-scented candles and books on Baltic resin. Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00, shop accessible without a museum ticket.

⏱ 1.5 hours
Ask for the museum's authenticity leaflet — it shows the salt-water float test and UV glow that separate real amber from pressed copal.
