Language	German. English spoken to an excellent standard throughout — Hamburg is Germany's most internationally connected city after Berlin; virtually all restaurant staff, hotel workers, and service industry employees speak good English. No German required but a few words (Entschuldigung — excuse me, bitte — please, danke — thank you) are appreciated.
Currency	Euro (€). Cards accepted everywhere including cafés, markets, and Fischbrötchen kiosks. The Fischmarkt on Sunday mornings has some cash-only vendors. ATMs everywhere in the city centre.
Transport	Hamburg HVV network (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, harbour ferries — all on the same ticket). Single ride: €3.70. Day ticket: €9.00 (covers all zones including the harbour ferry, which is the cheapest way to see the port). The Speicherstadt, Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity are walkable from each other. Blankenese: S1 or S11, 30 min from Hauptbahnhof.
Best time	May–September (the Alster and Elbe beaches are alive, the Fischmarkt in summer is at full intensity, long days with 21:00 sunsets in June). The Sunday Fischmarkt runs year-round but the 05:30 summer atmosphere is different from the 07:00 winter version. December: Hamburg's Christmas markets (7 separate markets across the city, the Dom market in Heiligengeistfeld is the largest in Germany) are excellent.
Getting in	Hamburg Airport (HAM): S1 to city centre 25 min, €3.70. Taxi: €25–35. Hamburg is connected to all major German cities by ICE high-speed rail: Berlin 1 hr 45 min (€29–89 advance), Munich 5.5 hrs. Ferry from Harwich (UK): DFDS overnight ferry (18 hrs).
Tipping	Round up at restaurants (10% is standard, leave on the table). Cafés: round up to nearest euro. Taxis: round up. The Fischmarkt vendors: no tipping. Hotel housekeeping: €1–2/night.
Safety	Hamburg is safe for tourists. The Reeperbahn area is safe in early evening but becomes adult-oriented after midnight. The area around Hauptbahnhof has street homelessness and some petty crime — watch bags in the station. The Speicherstadt, HafenCity, Alster, and Blankenese are entirely safe at all hours.
