Language	Korean (한국어). The Jeolla Province dialect (전라도 사투리) is distinct from Seoul Korean — it has a melodic, rising intonation and vocabulary differences that even other Koreans sometimes struggle with. English is spoken at major hotels and the ACC but very limited elsewhere. The Gwangju Biennale has extensive English materials.
Currency	South Korean Won (₩). Current rate approximately ₩1,470 = €1. Cards accepted at most restaurants and shops. T-money card (transit smart card available at convenience stores for ₩2,500 + top-up, works on all buses and Metro in Gwangju) is essential. Transport	Gwangju Metro (광주 도시철도 — 2 lines, ₩1,200/ride; useful for crossing the city). City buses (₩1,200/ride with T-money; bus 1187 to Mudeungsan). Best time	April–May (spring cherry blossoms, Mudeungsan hiking at its best, mild temperatures 14–22°C). Getting in	Gwangju-Songjeong KTX Station (광주송정역): the main high-speed rail station, 12km from the city centre; KTX from Seoul (1.5 hrs, ₩26,000–40,000), from Busan (2 hrs). Gwangju Station (광주역): older station, some slower trains. Gwangju Airport (KWJ): domestic flights from Seoul Gimpo (55 min). Bus from Gwangju Express Bus Terminal: to Seoul (3.5 hrs, ₩21,000).
Tipping	No tipping in South Korea — following the same social logic as Japan (tipping implies the service was a commercial transaction rather than a social obligation). At tourist-oriented restaurants in Seoul this convention is weakening slightly, but in Gwangju it remains firm: do not tip. Simply say gamsahamnida (감사합니다 — thank you) and the appreciation is complete.
Safety	Gwangju is extremely safe. South Korea has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world. The main concerns for visitors: losing your phone (left on a table) or getting on the wrong bus. The 5·18 Memorial sites are places of serious historical significance — appropriate behaviour (no loud conversations, no photography of grieving visitors at the cemetery) is expected and appreciated.
