Kathmandu for Culture Lovers — 3 Days of Newari Craft, Paubha Painting & Masked Dance

Malla palace museums, contemporary galleries in Rana courtyards, Charya dance theatre and the potters' and woodcarvers' quarters of the valley.

📍 Kathmandu, Nepal 📅 3-day itinerary

Kathmandu's culture is a working one: bronze casters still pour lost-wax deities beside 14th-century temples, paubha painters grind mineral pigment, and Newar dance troupes perform masked Charya. Three days across Patan, Bhaktapur and the old city.

Visual Arts & Architecture

09:00
🏛️ Patan Durbar Square & Patan Museum

Malla-era palace courtyards in Lalitpur. The museum inside Keshav Narayan Chowk holds some 200 gilt-bronze and stone deities, each labelled by iconography rather than date. Open 10:30–17:30 daily.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 NPR 1,000 (combined square + museum)
Enter through the north gate booth and ask for the ticket to be stamped — it covers re-entry on later days of your stay.
12:00
🕉️ Mahabouddha Temple, Oku Bahal

A 14th-century terracotta shikhara faced with thousands of moulded clay tiles, each bearing a seated Buddha. The approach lane is lined with metal-casting workshops still turning out lost-wax bronzes for temples.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 Free (NPR 50 donation box)
Ask a shopkeeper to let you onto their roof terrace — the courtyard is too tight to see the spire from ground level.
14:30
🖼️ Museum of Nepali Art (MoNA)

Three floors in a restored wing of the Kathmandu Guest House tracing paubha scroll painting from early thangka lineages through to contemporary Nepali canvases and mixed media. Open 11:00–18:00, closed Mondays.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 NPR 1,000 foreigners / NPR 250 Nepali
17:00
🎨 Siddhartha Art Gallery, Baber Mahal Revisited

Nepal's longest-running contemporary gallery, set in the converted Rana-era stables and brick courtyards of Baber Mahal Revisited. Shows new work by artists including Ashmina Ranjit and Sujan Chitrakar.

⏱ 1.5 hours
Openings usually fall on Friday evenings and are open to walk-ins — ask the front desk what is hanging next.

Performing Arts & Museums

10:00
🗿 National Museum of Nepal, Chhauni

Three buildings above the Vishnumati: the Juddha Jayatiya gallery of stone and wood sculpture, a Buddhist hall of thangkas and mandalas, and a history wing of Rana weaponry. Open 10:30–16:30, closed Tuesdays.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 NPR 150 foreigners + NPR 100 camera fee
Walk to the far Buddhist Art Gallery first — coach groups always start in the main sculpture hall.
13:00
🌿 Garden of Dreams (Kaiser Mahal)

Kaiser Shumsher's 1920 neo-classical garden behind Thamel, with six pavilions for the six Nepali seasons. Austrian conservators restored it in 2007; the sunken amphitheatre hosts evening recitals and readings.

⏱ 1 hour
15:00
👑 Hanuman Dhoka Palace & Tribhuvan Museum

The old royal palace on Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the Tribhuvan and Mahendra memorial museums and the nine-storey Basantapur tower. The Kumari Ghar courtyard alongside has the city's finest carved windows.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 NPR 1,000 foreigners / NPR 150 SAARC
18:00
🎭 Kala Mandapa at Hotel Vajra, Bijeshwori

The Institute of Nepalese Performing Arts stages masked Charya dance and Newari classical music in Hotel Vajra's timber-framed theatre, with painted ceilings by Nepali artists in the adjoining hall.

Performances are seasonal — call the hotel the same morning, as shows run only when a troupe is booked.

Local Culture & Neighbourhood Life

09:30
🏯 Bhaktapur Durbar Square & Pujari Math

The medieval core 13km east: the 55-Window Palace, the five-tiered Nyatapola, and the Pujari Math woodcarving school whose Peacock Window remains the benchmark for Newari joinery. Lanes are traffic-free.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 NPR 1,800 foreigners / NPR 500 SAARC
Show your passport at the ticket booth and ask for the extension — the same fee then covers every day of your visa.
12:30
🏺 Pottery Square (Talako), Bhaktapur

Two open squares where Prajapati families throw black clay on hand-spun wheels, then dry rows of curd pots and oil lamps in the sun. Firing happens under straw-and-ash mounds in the middle of the square.

⏱ 1.5 hours
14:30
🪵 Bungamati & Khokana villages

Two Newar farming settlements 10km south. Bungamati has the Rato Machhindranath compound and woodcarving workshops around its square; Khokana still presses mustard oil under a weighted wooden beam.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 NPR 200 village entry per settlement
17:30
📷 Patan Dhoka to Jhamsikhel studio lanes

The stretch between Patan Dhoka and Jhamsikhel holds the current studio scene: Yala Mandala's craft rooms, Image Ark's photography shows, and Dhokaima Café's garden stage for acoustic sets and book launches.

Photo Kathmandu and Kathmandu Triennale venues cluster here — read the noticeboards at Patan Dhoka for what is currently installed.
