Ulaanbaatar for Solo Travel Lovers — 3 Days of Steppe Hospitality and Hostel Campfires

Sociable hostels off Peace Avenue, throat-singing bars where strangers share a bottle, and half-day steppe escapes you can book from a common-room sofa.

📍 Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia 📅 3-day itinerary

Ulaanbaatar is compact enough to walk alone and small enough that the same faces reappear. Between Seoul Street's craft-beer bars, the hostels on Baga Toiruu and the ger camps an hour out, solo travellers rarely stay solo for long.

Solo-Friendly Spots & Safe Neighbourhoods

09:00
🛏️ Baga Toiruu & Peace Avenue hostel district

The inner ring road between Sukhbaatar Square and the State Department Store holds most backpacker beds — Golden Gobi, Zaya and UB Guesthouse all sit within 500m. Dorms run ₮25,000–35,000, private rooms ₮70,000. Streets are lit and busy until midnight.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 ₮25,000–35,000 per dorm night
Book a hostel with a kitchen and a shared 8am breakfast table — that meal is where Gobi tour groups actually form.
12:00
🥟 Modern Nomads 2, Baga Toiruu

A canteen-style Mongolian chain where solo diners at the bar counter are normal. Khuushuur (fried mutton pancakes) ₮4,500, buuz dumplings ₮6,000, tsuivan noodles ₮9,000. English picture menus, open 10:00–23:00, card accepted.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 ₮9,000–16,000 for a full plate

14:30
🎨 976 Art Gallery, Peace Avenue

A small contemporary space run by Mongolian artists showing rotating painting and photography work; staff speak English and are used to lone visitors lingering. Free entry, Tue–Sat 11:00–18:00, three rooms you can cover slowly in an hour.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Free entry
17:00
Tom N Toms Coffee, Sukhbaatar Square corner

Two-floor Korean coffee house with reliable wifi, wall sockets and upstairs window seats over the square — the standard solo-traveller work stop. Americano ₮6,500, honey bread ₮12,000, open 08:00–22:00 daily.

⏱ 1.5 hours
Sit upstairs facing the window: it's the warmest corner and the free wifi is stable enough to download offline Maps.me tiles for the steppe on day three.

Social Scenes & Meeting Locals

10:00
🧣 Gobi Cashmere Factory Store, Khan-Uul

Mongolia's flagship cashmere outlet where staff walk single shoppers through grades and goat regions. Scarves from ₮90,000, jumpers ₮250,000–600,000, open 09:00–20:00. VAT refund desk on site for purchases over ₮100,000.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 ₮35,000
Arrive 30 minutes early and take a front-row aisle seat — musicians linger afterwards and will demonstrate the fiddle if you ask.
18:00
🍺 Seoul Street bar strip — Hops & Rocks and Grand Khaan Irish Pub

The city's densest run of expat and student bars, both with long counters made for drinking alone. Local craft pints ₮8,000–12,000, Chinggis lager ₮5,000. Busy from 19:00, live bands Thursday to Saturday, taxis easy until 02:00.

Sit at the bar rather than a table; Mongolian regulars practising English will start the conversation for you within a round.

Solo Adventures & Self-Discovery

🪨 Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad), Terelj

A 24m granite outcrop shaped like a turtle, with a scramble route up the back for a valley panorama. Free to climb, food stalls and camel rides at the base for ₮15,000, and enough passing travellers that photo swaps happen naturally.

14:30
🛕 Aryabal Meditation Temple, Terelj

A hillside temple reached by a 108-step staircase and a suspension bridge, built in the shape of an elephant. Entry ₮5,000, open 09:00–18:00 in summer. Prayer-wheel corridors and empty benches make it the calmest solo hour of the trip.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 ₮5,000
17:30
🏇 Chinggis Khaan Equestrian Statue, Tsonjin Boldog

A 40m stainless-steel horseman on the drive back to the city; a lift and stairway inside the horse's neck put you on the head for steppe views in every direction. Entry ₮20,000, open 09:00–18:00, museum in the base included.

Ask the van driver to stop here on the return leg rather than booking it separately — most Terelj day trips include it if you ask before departure.
