KL is the cheapest capital in Southeast Asia to do properly. Free entry mosques and temples, RM1.30 LRT hops, RM6 nasi kandar plates, and viewpoints of the Petronas Towers that cost exactly zero ringgit if you know which hill to climb.
KL's oldest mosque (1909, Moorish domes by A.B. Hubback) sits exactly where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet — the 'muddy confluence' that named the city. Free entry, free robe loan, open to visitors 09:00–12:30 and 14:30–16:00 daily except Friday.
The 8.2-hectare padang where the Union Jack came down on 31 August 1957, ringed by the copper-domed Sultan Abdul Samad Building (1897) and one of the world's tallest flagpoles at 95m. Entirely open-air, no ticket, no gate, 24 hours.
Free-entry museum in a 1905 Hubback railway building on Merdeka Square, covering songket weaving, batik blocks and Peranakan beadwork across four galleries. Open 09:00–17:00 daily; air-conditioned, which matters at 33°C.
KL's 91-hectare colonial-era Lake Gardens, laid out in 1888. The Hibiscus Garden, Orchid Garden (free on weekdays), lake trails and Sunken Garden all cost nothing. Open 07:00–20:00; the Bird Park inside is the only paid section.
The relocated Imbi hawker institution: Ah Fook sang nyuk mien (pork noodles) at RM9, Sisters crispy popiah RM5, kaya toast and kopi for RM4.50. Open 06:30–14:00, closed Mondays. Cash only, locals queue from 07:00.
Chinatown's covered green-roofed bazaar, trading since the 1870s tin-mining days. Browsing costs nothing; air kelapa (coconut water) RM6, air mata kucing herbal drink RM3.50 at the Sri Mahkota corner stall. Stalls run 10:00 to roughly 22:00.
Vishal Food & Catering and Sri Nirwana Maju serve unlimited-refill banana leaf rice with three vegetables, rasam, papadum and rice from RM8–12. Brickfields is a 6-minute walk from KL Sentral, so no transport cost from the transit hub.
Bukit Bintang's 400m open-air food strip, plastic stools out from 17:00 until 04:00. Grilled chicken wings RM4 each at Wong Ah Wah, char kway teow RM12, satay RM1.20 a stick, fresh coconut RM7. Cash strongly preferred.
A 400-million-year-old limestone cavern with the 42.7m gold Murugan statue, reached by KTM Komuter from KL Sentral for RM2.60 each way (30 minutes). Temple Cave entry is free; open 06:00–21:00. Cover knees and shoulders.
A 9.37-hectare patch of primary dipterocarp rainforest gazetted in 1906 — the oldest protected forest reserve in Malaysia — with a 200m canopy walkway 21m above the floor and the KL Tower rising straight overhead. Open 07:00–18:00.
A six-tiered 1987 Chinese temple on Robson Heights with a full-city panorama from its upper terrace, 12,000 lanterns strung year-round and free entry. Reach it by MRT to Muzium Negara plus a RM8 short Grab, or bus 12 for RM2.
A 370m sirih-junjung-shaped pedestrian bridge over the Klang River connecting Kampung Baru to KLCC, lit gold after dark. It frames the Petronas Towers head-on for free — the same shot the observation deck sells for RM98.
