Medan for Shopping Lovers — 3 Days of Ulos Looms, Fabric Lanes & Bika Ambon

From the songket lanes of Pasar Ikan Lama to pavement rattan workshops and Jl. Majapahit's honeycomb-cake row.

📍 Medan, Indonesia 📅 3-day itinerary

Medan shops in layers: Malay songket and Indian silk in one covered lane, Batak looms in a back alley off Jl. A.R. Hakim, Chinese roasteries in Kesawan. Three days here move from pavement rattan workshops to air-conditioned malls and back.

Local Markets & Artisan Shops

09:00
🧵 Pasar Ikan Lama

Despite the name, no fish has been sold here since the 1950s — three covered lanes off Jl. Perniagaan packed with songket, Indian silk, batik and curtain fabric by the metre. Open 09:00–17:00, closed Sunday.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 Fabric from IDR 35,000 per metre
Counter-offer at half the first quote; the Batak stalls at the rear sell ulos cheaper than Petisah.
12:00
🌶️ Pusat Pasar (Pajak Sentral)

Medan's four-storey central market: dried chillies and andaliman pepper on the ground floor, gold and watch counters above, and a whole wing of cheap luggage. Busiest 10:00–14:00, and most stalls take cash only.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 Andaliman pepper IDR 20,000 per 100g
Enter from Jl. Bulan to reach the spice aisle without the phone-case gauntlet.
14:30
🪡 Ulos Sianipar Weaving House

A working ulos workshop on Gg. Pendidikan off Jl. A.R. Hakim where around twenty wooden looms run behind the shopfront. Watch a sadum cloth take shape, then buy scarves, table runners or framed panels. Open 08:00–17:00.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Scarves IDR 150,000; full ulos IDR 450,000–3,000,000
17:00
Kopi Apek, Jl. Hindu

A 1920s Kesawan shophouse that still roasts Mandheling and Sidikalang beans in the back room and sells them by the kilo in plain brown bags. Drink a kopi susu at the marble tables while they grind your order.

⏱ 1.5 hours
Buy whole bean rather than ground — the pre-ground stock can sit a week.

Boutiques & Design Districts

10:00
🛍️ Sun Plaza

Medan's flagship mall on Jl. Zainul Arifin: six floors holding Batik Danar Hadi, Indonesian label counters and a basement supermarket stocking Sumatran coffee and bottled sambal. Trading 10:00–22:00 daily.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Batik shirts IDR 350,000–1,200,000
The fourth-floor tailors will take in a batik shirt in about two hours while you shop.
13:00
👕 Jalan Dr. Mansyur distro strip

The student street running past USU campus, lined with distro outlets selling Indonesian streetwear labels, screen-printed tees and cheap denim. Shutters go up around 11:00 and most shops stay open until 21:00.

⏱ 1 hour
15:00
🧺 Rattan workshops, Jl. Gatot Subroto (Sei Sikambing)

A half-kilometre run of open-fronted rattan workshops where chairs, baskets, lampshades and baby cradles are bent and bound right on the pavement. Small pieces pack flat and sellers arrange cargo shipping.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Baskets IDR 60,000; chairs from IDR 450,000
18:00
🏬 Deli Park Podomoro City

Opened in 2023 on old Deli railway land off Jl. Putri Hijau — a glass atrium with fashion anchors, minimalist homeware floors and a Sumatran craft corner. Open until 22:00 and noticeably calmer after 20:00.

Use the north parking deck; the Jl. Putri Hijau entrance clogs from 18:30.

Souvenirs & Hidden Gems

09:30
🎁 Pasar Petisah

Two floors on Jl. Rotan: ulos and songket, Batak wood carving, horn combs and bulk kopi upstairs, fresh produce below. Doors open 08:00 and close around 17:00, with the souvenir aisles filling after 10:00.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Carved wooden Batak calendars IDR 75,000
Head straight upstairs — the ground-floor touts near the entrance quote roughly triple.
12:30
🍰 Bolu Meranti, Jl. Kruing

The rolled sponge cake Medanese carry onto every flight home, with cheese, chocolate and durian fillings baked through the morning at the Jl. Kruing bakery. Boxes leave warm and the queue peaks 12:00–15:00.

⏱ 1.5 hours
14:30
🥭 Berastagi Supermarket (Pasar Buah)

The Jl. Gatot Subroto fruit hall stacked with Karo highland produce — markisa syrup, salak, avocado — plus a packaged-souvenir aisle of Sidikalang coffee, dodol and sambal teri. Open 08:00–22:00.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Markisa passionfruit syrup IDR 45,000 per bottle
17:30
🍯 Zulaikha Bika Ambon, Jl. Majapahit

Jl. Majapahit is the bika ambon street: a dozen shopfronts selling the yellow honeycomb cake, with Zulaikha among the longest-standing. Baked in batches all afternoon, so ask which tray came out last.

Bika ambon keeps about four days unrefrigerated — buy it on your final afternoon.
