Madurai shops the way it has for centuries — in the four concentric streets ringing the Meenakshi Temple. Three days of tailors working under carved granite, Sungudi tie-dye cottons, brass lamps sold by weight, and one mall for contrast.
A 1635 pillared hall on the temple's east side, now filled with roughly 300 tailor stalls, textile counters and stone-carving workshops. Shirts stitched in four to six hours from ₹450; carved Nayak pillars overhead.
The outer processional street lined with brass and bronze dealers selling kuthuvilakku oil lamps, urulis, temple bells and dance anklets. Small lamps start near ₹350, waist-high standing lamps run ₹4,000 and up.
Tamil Nadu's government handloom chain: fixed prices, printed bills, no haggling. Chettinad checked cottons, Madurai Sungudi tie-dye and Kanchipuram silks. Cotton saris from ₹900, silk from ₹6,500.
The city's after-dark retail spine, where saree houses, fancy-goods stalls and bangle carts stay lit past 21:00. Glass bangle sets ₹60–200, printed cotton dupattas around ₹250, steel tiffin carriers ₹300.
The state crafts emporium on West Veli Street sells Thanjavur bronze, palm-leaf painting, rosewood carving and Athangudi tiles, each with an origin label. Small Nataraja bronzes from ₹2,800; export packing arranged in-store.
Floors of silk under one roof — Kanchipuram zari saris, Madurai Sungudi cottons, ready blouses on the mezzanine and a tailoring desk upstairs. Cotton saris ₹700–2,000, silk from ₹8,000, blouse stitching in 48 hours.
Madurai's air-conditioned mall near Mattuthavani, with a supermarket, national brand floors, a food court and gift wrapping. Open 10:00–21:30, useful when the bazaar heat wins. Parking ₹20 for two-wheelers, ₹40 for cars.
The gold quarter's landmark showroom, where temple jewellery — jhumka earrings, oddiyanam waist belts, Lakshmi coin necklaces — is sold by weight plus an 8–14% making charge. Silver anklets and toe rings from ₹1,200.
The wholesale jasmine floor opens around 04:00 and peaks by 07:00; by 09:30 the retail rows still sell malli, kanakambaram and rose garlands by the muzham, an arm's length. Jasmine runs ₹100–400 a kilo by auction.
The government khadi outlet for hand-spun cotton: kurtas, angavastram shawls, unbleached yardage and block-printed lungis. Prices are fixed, and a 15–20% state rebate runs during the Gandhi Jayanti season each October.
A one-lane wholesale alley behind the temple where shops trade by the dozen but will break bulk for visitors. Lungis ₹180, cotton towels ₹90, Sungudi half-saris around ₹600. Most counters take cash only.
West Veli Street's book row carries Tamil classics, illustrated Meenakshi temple histories and English translations of Sangam poetry. New Century Book House and Higginbothams sit within 200m and stay open to about 20:00.
