Chennai for History Lovers — 3 Days from Pallava Rock to Raj Fort

Seventh-century Pallava temples, the East India Company's first fortress, and the Dravidian movement that rewrote Tamil identity

📍 Chennai, India 📅 3-day itinerary

Chennai stacks 1,300 years of history in layers: Pallava-era shrines at Mahabalipuram, Portuguese and Armenian traders in George Town, and the fort where Britain's Indian empire began in 1644. Walk them in sequence and the city's whole story unfolds.

Ancient & Medieval History

09:00
🛕 Parthasarathy Temple, Triplicane

Chennai's oldest structure, founded by the Pallavas in the 8th century and expanded by Cholas and Vijayanagara kings. The only temple showing five Vishnu avatars; inscriptions in Pallava-Grantha script survive on the inner walls. Open 06:00–12:00, 16:00–21:00.

⏱ 2-3 hours 💶 Free entry; special darshan ₹20
Enter by the east gopuram and ask the priest to point out the Pallava-era inscription slab left of the Narasimha shrine — most visitors walk past it.
12:00
🗿 Government Museum Bronze Gallery, Egmore

The world's finest collection of Chola bronzes, including the 11th-century Ardhanarishvara and Nataraja figures cast by the lost-wax method. Housed in the 1851 Indo-Saracenic complex. Open 09:30–17:00, closed Fridays.

⏱ 1.5 hours 💶 ₹15 Indians, ₹250 foreigners; camera ₹200
The bronze gallery is a separate building behind the main museum — buy the combined ticket at the front gate or you will have to walk back.
14:30
San Thome Basilica & Tomb of St Thomas

One of only three churches worldwide built over an apostle's tomb. The Portuguese raised the first church here in 1523; the neo-Gothic building dates to 1896. The underground crypt holds the burial chamber and a 16th-century Portuguese stone cross.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Free; crypt museum ₹10
17:00
🏔️ St Thomas Mount (Parangi Malai)

The 300-foot hill where the apostle Thomas is said to have been martyred in 72 CE. The 1523 Portuguese chapel at the summit holds the Bleeding Cross, carved from stone, and a painting of the Madonna attributed to St Luke. 134 granite steps lead up.

⏱ 1.5 hours
Climb the stepped path from the base rather than driving up — the 14 Stations of the Cross date from the Portuguese period and the summit view over the airport at dusk is the payoff.

Modern History & Monuments

10:00
🏰 Fort St George Museum

Britain's first Indian fortress, completed 1644, now housing 10 galleries of Company-era weapons, palanquins, coins and the original Union Jack lowered in 1947. The 1795 Exchange Building holds Clive's letters and Cornwallis's marble statue.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 ₹5 Indians, ₹200 foreigners
The Tamil Nadu Assembly still sits inside the fort walls — carry photo ID for the security check at the Rajaji Salai gate or you will be turned back.
13:00
🇦🇲 Armenian Church of the Holy Virgin Mary

Built 1712 on Armenian Street by merchants who ran Chennai's Persian trade. Six bells cast in 1754 still hang in the belfry, the largest in the city. The courtyard holds 350 Armenian gravestones, the oldest dated 1663.

⏱ 1 hour
15:00
🎓 Senate House, University of Madras

Robert Chisholm's 1879 masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture, mixing Byzantine domes with Chalukyan detail. The 150-foot hall hosted every Madras convocation for a century and was restored in 2006 after decades of neglect.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Free; permission from the university office required
18:00
🕯️ Ripon Building & Victoria Public Hall

The 1913 neo-Baroque Ripon Building, seat of the Chennai Corporation — Asia's oldest municipal body, founded 1688 — stands opposite the 1888 Victoria Public Hall, where the first Indian National Congress delegates from Madras met.

Both are floodlit after sunset and the Ripon Building's Westminster chiming clock, installed 1913, still strikes on the quarter hour — stand on the Poonamallee High Road side to hear it.

Living History: Neighbourhoods & Stories

09:30
🏛️ Mahabalipuram Shore Temple & Pancha Rathas

The Pallava port capital 55km south, carved 630–728 CE under Narasimhavarman I. The granite Shore Temple and five monolithic rathas cut from single boulders are UNESCO-listed. Arjuna's Penance is the world's largest bas-relief at 27m by 9m.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 ₹40 Indians, ₹600 foreigners
The single ticket covers the Shore Temple and the Rathas but not the free-entry cave temples on the hill — do the paid sites before 11:00, then the hill caves.
12:30
🐊 DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum, Muttukadu

Eighteen relocated heritage houses from across South India, dismantled and rebuilt beam by beam — a Chettinad merchant mansion, a Tamil agraharam street, a Kerala Syrian Christian home. Open 10:00–18:00, closed Tuesdays.

⏱ 1.5 hours
14:30
🏘️ George Town heritage walk (Armenian & Thambu Chetty Streets)

The 'Black Town' laid out beyond the fort walls in 1673, where Tamil, Telugu, Armenian, Jewish and Gujarati traders lived in separate quarters. Wholesale bazaars still occupy Godown Street and the 1795 High Court complex anchors the south end.

⏱ 2 hours 💶 Free; guided Madras Inherited walks ₹700
17:30
📜 Periyar Thidal & Dravidian movement sites, Vepery

Headquarters of the Dravidar Kazhagam, holding E V Ramasamy 'Periyar's' library, his samadhi and the archive of the 1925 Self-Respect Movement that broke caste and Brahmin ritual dominance and reshaped Tamil politics for a century.

The reading room stays open until 20:00 and the staff will pull English translations of Periyar's Kudi Arasu editorials if you ask at the desk.
