🏨 Astor Hotel Museum (利顺德博物馆)

The 1863 Astor's basement museum keeps guest registers signed by Puyi, Sun Yat-sen and Herbert Hoover, plus China's first hand-cranked lift. Victorian teak corridors run above; ¥50 covers the ballroom and archive rooms.

🏛️ Jiefang North Road banking street (解放北路)

Nine blocks of granite neoclassicism: the former HSBC, Yokohama Specie Bank and Banque de l'Indochine stand shoulder to shoulder along 1.1 km of the old British and French concession bund. Free to walk at any hour.

Xikai Cathedral / St Joseph's (西开教堂)

A triple-domed Romanesque brick basilica finished in 1917, seating 1,500 under a barrel vault, with Mandarin-sung evening mass at 18:00 on weekdays. Enter from Xining Road; free, modest dress, no flash photography.

🏺 Tianjin Museum (天津博物馆)

The swan-wing building at the Culture Centre holds 200,000 objects: Warring States jades, Qing court robes, Ming and Qing painting galleries and a strong ritual-bronzes hall. Free with passport, 09:00–16:30, closed Mondays.

🎭 Tianjin Grand Theatre (天津大剧院)

Gerkan Marg's cantilevered concrete shell houses a 1,600-seat opera house and a 1,200-seat concert hall. The west-side box office lists the week's Peking opera and symphony dates, with same-day returns from about ¥80.

📚 Liang Qichao Former Residence & Yinbing Room (饮冰室)

The reformer's 1914 grey-brick house and the adjoining Yinbing Room study, where he wrote most of his late essays, keep original desks, first editions and Italianate tiled floors. Combined ticket ¥20, 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays.

🍵 Mingliu Teahouse (名流茶馆), Xinhua Road

Tianjin's home stage for crosstalk (xiangsheng) since 1991: two hours of comic duos, kuaiban clapper storytelling and folk singing, with jasmine tea and sunflower seeds at the table. Tickets ¥40–80, shows from 19:30.

Sit in the third or fourth row — front-table guests get pulled into the routines, and it is all in Mandarin.

🧧 Tianjin Confucian Temple Museum (天津文庙博物馆)

Twin Ming-founded county and prefecture temples share courtyards of 300-year-old cypresses, with a Dacheng Hall of ancestral tablets and a stone forest of imperial examination steles. ¥30, 09:00–16:30, closed Mondays.

🪁 Ancient Culture Street & Tianhou Palace (古文化街 · 天后宫)

Qing-style shopfronts sell Yangliuqing New Year prints, Niren Zhang painted clay figures and Wei family silk kites; at the centre the 1326 Tianhou Palace to the sea goddess Mazu still burns incense. Street free, temple ¥10.

🎪 Guangdong Guild Hall / Tianjin Drama Museum (广东会馆)

The 1907 Cantonese merchants' guild hides Tianjin's finest auditorium: a domed nail-free timber theatre with carved gilt screens where Mei Lanfang performed. Costumes, playbills and opera masks fill the side galleries. ¥10.

🕍 Wanghailou Church (望海楼教堂)

The 1869 French Gothic twin-towered church on the Hai River, burned during the 1870 Tianjin incident and twice rebuilt, faces Shizilin Bridge; its brick west front is floodlit at dusk. Interior opens Sunday mornings only.

Cross Shizilin Bridge for the framed view of both spires, then follow the north bank back towards the old town.
