Dalian is the rare Chinese metropolis where the best sights cost nothing: the entire Binhai coastal path, every colonial square and most beaches are free. Trams cost ¥1, a bowl of noodles ¥8, and hostels near Zhongshan run ¥60 a night.
A 30km cliff-edge road along the Yellow Sea, entirely free and open 24 hours. Start at the red Beidaqiao Bridge and walk west on the wooden boardwalk clinging to the rock face. Bus 702 from Qingniwaqiao gets you there for ¥2.
Dalian's oldest commercial street, five minutes' walk from Zhongshan Square. Hole-in-the-wall counters sell seafood dumplings at ¥12 for 12, hand-pulled noodles ¥8, and grilled squid skewers ¥5. Cash and WeChat Pay both accepted at most stalls.
Free admission with passport ID at the Xinghai Square building. Four floors covering the Russian concession, the Japanese South Manchuria Railway era and the 1945 handover, with English labels on the main historical floor. Open 09:00-17:00, closed Mondays.
The reclaimed waterfront west of Xinghai Square is free public space with a 2km promenade facing the cross-sea bridge. Locals fly kites, swim off the pebble beach and set up folding chairs for the sunset. No ticket, no closing time.
Where Dalian households buy their catch, not tourists. Live scallops go for ¥15/kg, clams ¥10/kg, sea urchin ¥8 apiece in summer. Upstairs cook-your-catch stalls will steam or grill anything you buy downstairs for about ¥10 a plate.
The less-famous sister line to the 201, running west from Xinghai Square out to the Lushun-side suburbs. Flat fare ¥1 for the whole 45-minute ride, air-conditioned modern cars, and window seats over the coastal ridge nobody photographs.
Dalian's student and office-worker district around Xi'an Road metro. Basement food courts in Roosevelt Center serve rice bowls at ¥15, Korean-Chinese cold noodles ¥12, and the street's bakeries drop prices 50% after 19:00.
Open-air kaochuan grills fire up around 18:00 in the lanes behind Erqi Square. Lamb skewers ¥2 each, grilled oysters ¥5, plastic stools on the pavement and Dalian's own Bangchuidao beer at ¥6 a bottle.
A free hillside park between Binhai Road and the sea with the highest publicly accessible view over Dalian Bay and the harbour approaches. The trail up from the Lianhua Road entrance takes 25 minutes and the summit terrace has no gate or ticket booth.
Free pebble-and-sand beach in a cliff-ringed cove, popular with Dalian's year-round swimmers who plunge in even in January. Public showers ¥5, lockers ¥10, and a shaded terrace of ¥8 noodle stalls above the sand. Bus 5 from downtown, ¥2.
The passenger ferry from Dalian Port costs a fraction of any harbour cruise. Even skipping the boat, the Donggang waterfront district — reclaimed land with a music fountain plaza and the conference centre's shell-shaped roof — is free to roam.
Free 24-hour park below the giant football sculpture, walking distance from Zhongshan Square. Square dancing starts around 19:00, retirees practise erhu by the lake, and the hillside path gives a free night view of the city's lit-up towers.
