Language	Dari (دری — Eastern Persian; the Afghan dialect of Farsi; the lingua franca of Kabul and the language of government, education, and urban culture; one of two official languages) and Pashto (پښتو — the language of the Pashtun ethnic group, the majority of southern and eastern Afghanistan; the other official language). In Kabul, Dari is the dominant language. English was widely used in the international community (NGOs, embassies, universities) until 2021 and is understood by the educated urban population.
Currency	Afghan Afghani (AFN ؋). Current rate approximately AFN 90 = €1. The Afghan economy is heavily cash-based. International bank transfers and cards are not functional in the current political situation. USD was widely used as a parallel currency in the international community and continues informally.
Transport	Kabul traffic is extremely congested (the city grew from 500,000 to 4.5 million in 20 years without corresponding road infrastructure). Yellow taxis (shared route taxis) are the traditional mode of transport (AFN 20–50 per trip). Private car hire with driver is the most practical option for visitors. Walking is feasible in specific areas (the Babur Gardens area, Wazir Akbar Khan, Chicken Street) but requires security awareness.
Best time	April–June (the Afghan spring: 15–25°C, the mountains still snow-capped, the Shomali Plain green with wheat fields; the best time for Istalif and outdoor sites). September–October (mild, 15–22°C). Avoid December–February (severe cold, Kabul at 1,790m altitude; snow is common). July–August: hot (30–38°C in the valley) but manageable.
Getting in	Kabul International Airport (KBL) — HKIA (Hamid Karzai International Airport): 16km from central Kabul. The airport has been under Taliban control since August 2021; international flights operate through Ariana Afghan Airlines and limited regional carriers. International access for journalists, aid workers, and diplomats via specific visa processes. Tourist access is not currently possible.
Tipping	Tipping is not part of Afghan culture at the traditional level (the concept of service fee does not apply in local restaurants or markets). In the international community restaurants of Wazir Akbar Khan, 10% is appreciated. Guides: USD 20–50/day.
Safety	Kabul requires extreme security awareness. Since August 2021 the city is governed by the Taliban administration. Terrorist attacks (particularly from ISKP — Islamic State Khorasan Province, the Afghan affiliate of ISIS) continue to occur. Most Western governments advise against all travel to Afghanistan.
