An eight-kilometre coastal path running from Schoenmakerskop to Sardinia Bay, named after the 1647 Portuguese wreck whose salvaged cannon marks the start. Rocky shoreline, dune fynbos and almost no shade the whole way.
Pollok Beach, at the Wildside end of the seafront, has the most forgiving beginner break in the bay and seasonal lifeguards. Local schools run two-hour lessons with board and wetsuit included, usually in groups of four.
The 1799 stone fort above the Baakens Valley is the oldest surviving British building in South Africa — four cannon, metre-thick walls and a clear view down to the harbour cranes. Free, unstaffed and rarely more than a few people.
