Hurghada looks like it was built yesterday, but the coast behind it carries Roman quarry roads, Ptolemaic ports and a 1905 fishing village that became Egypt's first oil town. These three days trace that layered past through museums, mosques, monasteries and desert ruins.
Opened 2020 on Village Road, the only museum in Egypt with artefacts spanning all periods in one hall — Old Kingdom statuary, a Fayum mummy portrait, Graeco-Roman glass and Islamic metalwork. Open daily 09:00–14:00 and 17:00–23:00.
North of Hurghada lie the remains of Abu Sha'ar, a late-Roman fort of c. 309 AD guarding the road to the Nile. Mudbrick walls, a chapel and cisterns survive in low relief — the closest visible trace of Rome's Red Sea trade network.
Hurghada's largest mosque, completed 2012 beside the port, with two 40m minarets and a Fatimid-revival facade of carved limestone. Built on the site where the original fishing-village prayer hall stood before the port expansion.
The Coptic Orthodox parish that served the migrant workers who arrived from Upper Egypt for the oil fields in the 1940s. Domed sanctuary, icon screen and a small courtyard cemetery recording the town's first Christian families.
Egypt's oil industry began here — Gemsa in 1908 and Ras Gharib in 1938 — and it is why Hurghada exists at all. The coastal road north passes 1930s pumping stations, company housing rows and rusted derrick frames still in place.
Concrete obelisk honouring sailors lost in the 1967 and 1973 wars, when the Red Sea fleet operated from Hurghada and the Israeli-held Sinai lay across 60km of water. Bronze plaques list ships including the destroyer El Qaher.
The imperial porphyry quarry worked from 18 AD to the 5th century, the sole source of the purple stone in Rome's Pantheon columns and Byzantine sarcophagi. Workers' village, a Serapis temple of 113 AD and abandoned column drums remain.
The round-tower Sheraton of 1963 was Hurghada's first international hotel, built when the town had 5,000 residents and no paved road to Cairo. Its silhouette on Sheraton Road became the template for the 37km strip that followed.
The 1905 village core, where families from Qena and the Ababda Bedouin settled to dive for pearls and mother-of-pearl. Boat carpenters still work the alleys behind the market, using the same shallow-hull design as a century ago.
The town's original commercial street, still trading spices, galabeyas and copper from stalls held by the same families for three generations. Signage in Arabic and Russian records the Soviet tourist decades of the 1970s and 80s.
Founded c. 356 AD around the cave where Anthony the Great lived as a hermit, this is the oldest inhabited Christian monastery on earth. The Church of St Anthony holds 13th-century wall paintings uncovered during 2000s conservation work.
