The Gombe commune (the central district, where most hotels, restaurants, and the Académie are located) is relatively safe during the day. Avoid: the Masina, Lemba, and Kimbanseke communes at night. Always use a reliable taxi or a trusted contact for transport. Do not walk at night. The most significant risks: opportunistic theft and armed robbery (carry minimal cash, a copy of your passport rather than the original, and avoid displaying expensive items (phones, cameras)). Kinshasa is not a city for independent backpackers — a local contact or a tour operator significantly improves both safety and experience.
