Nassau
Nassau is the capital of The Bahamas — a city of pink-painted colonial buildings, straw market vendors and conch fritters set against the impossibly blue waters of the Atlantic and the warm-current Caribbean that surround New Providence Island. The city was a pirate haven in the early 18th century when Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Anne Bonny operated from its harbour — the Pirates of Nassau Museum re-creates this history with theatrical precision. Nassau today is the wealthiest city in the Caribbean by GDP per capita, powered by offshore banking and tourism, but its heart remains the Bay Street colonial strip, the Nassau Public Library built in an octagonal 18th-century jail and the Queen's Staircase — 66 steps carved by enslaved people from solid limestone, now leading to Fort Fincastle at the top of Bennett's Hill. The conch culture — conch salad, cracked conch and conch fritters are the essential Nassau street foods — and the Junkanoo festival (Boxing Day and New Year's Day, the Caribbean's most spectacular street parade) define the authentic Bahamian character beneath the cruise ship economy.
