Manama
Manama is the compact, cosmopolitan capital of Bahrain, an island kingdom that punches far above its size in cultural ambition and historical depth. The Bahrain National Museum holds artefacts from the Dilmun civilisation — a Bronze Age trading empire that flourished here 5,000 years ago when Bahrain was thought to be the Garden of Eden. The Qal'at al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort) UNESCO site layers 4,000 years of Phoenician, Greek, Sassanid and Portuguese occupation. Modern Manama is where Bahraini tradition and Gulf modernism meet most visibly: the Bab al-Bahrain souq sells saffron and pearls steps from glass skyscrapers; the Adliya district's art galleries and restaurants rival Dubai's creative scene; and Formula 1 returns annually to the Bahrain International Circuit. Bahrain is also the most socially liberal of the Gulf states — alcohol is available in hotels and licensed restaurants, and the dress code is relaxed by regional standards.
