Edinburgh

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe — a compact medieval and Georgian capital built on volcanic rock above the Firth of Forth, with a castle on an extinct volcano as its centrepiece. Scotland's capital (population 550,000) is simultaneously ancient and electric: the Royal Mile connects Edinburgh Castle (founded 12th century) to the Palace of Holyroodhouse (the Queen's Scottish residence) through a continuous layer of closes, wynds and courtyards hiding bars, whisky shops and subterranean vaults. The New Town (18th century Georgian grid, UNESCO) is one of the finest examples of planned urban architecture in the world. And every August, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the world's largest arts festival — transforms the city into something that has to be experienced to be believed.

Glasgow

Glasgow (population 635,000 — "Glaschu" in Scottish Gaelic: the most precisely "dear green place" Scottish-Gaelic-etymology single Glasgow place name) is the most culturally vibrant single Scottish city and the most precisely Charles-Rennie-Mackintosh-Art-Nouveau single European city. Inverness

Inverness is the capital of the Scottish Highlands — a city of 50,000 people at the eastern end of the Great Glen (the geological fault that bisects Scotland from northeast to southwest, occupied by Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy), where the River Ness drains into the Moray Firth. It is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and the administrative centre for the largest council area in the country (Highland Council covers 26,484 square kilometres). Inverness has two extraordinary assets for a city its size: it is the gateway to Loch Ness (the 22-mile freshwater loch, 230m deep (deeper than the North Sea at its deepest), the largest body of fresh water in Great Britain by volume, and the home of the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) — the most famous cryptid in the world, based on an alleged photograph taken in 1934 (the 'Surgeon's Photograph', subsequently exposed as a fake, but Nessie-sightings continue to 2025)); and it is 5km from Culloden Battlefield (the site of the final pitched battle on British soil, 16 April 1746, where the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was destroyed by the Duke of Cumberland in 40 minutes, ending the Highland clan system forever). Best months: May–September (the highland summer, long daylight hours, the best chance of clear weather at Loch Ness and Culloden).
